Today for the "Women's History Month" project, I would like to introduce you to this fantastic woman
Meet Perian J Pendleton Carpenter, 60, wife, mother of 3, an exceptional daughter...
Perian lives with Rod, her husband of 15 years, in the coastal community of Camp Ellis, where she grew up.
She attended Saco Public Schools and graduated from Thornton Academy in 1979. Perian attended the University of Southern Maine and other Colleges earning several degrees and certificates, including the ability to Train others on Human Trafficking Awareness.
Perian has worked in the Saco Community most of her life and held her first job at age 13 at Wormwoods Restaurant. She served as a substitute teacher for Saco Public schools, tutored terminally ill children, she has worked in the Medical and Social Service fields as well as volunteered with many local organizations.
She enjoys serving the public and takes pride in her current position as Mobility Manager at BSOOB. She created her position with the help of her previous director and many contacts in Maine as well as the National Center of Mobility Management. At that time, she was only one of three in the State with the title and has since assisted others. Perian has traveled to other states to speak about her role as a Mobility Manager and continues to serve on multiple Transportation Committees about how Mobility Management effects many in our community. As a Mobility Manager she was also able to develop the Transit Angel Project, which through donations from local businesses provides transportation passes to people in need.
She currently serves as the Chair of the Board of Directors for the Old Orchard Beach Chamber of Commerce. Perian is also the Secretary for the City of Saco Shoreline Commission and is a member of the Save Our Shores Saco Bay group. As being a lifelong resident in Camp Ellis, she has personally seen the destruction the ocean has had on the beach communities in Saco and has decided to be involved in resolving these issues.
Perian enjoys her work with the Old Orchard Beach Community Friendly Connection and the Saco Age Friendly Community. Perian continued her family’s long tradition in fire service when she became a member of the local auxiliary at the age of 18. Later she became an EMT.
Family is a huge part of Perian’s life. She cares for her mother who will turn 91 on March 19h, and she helped care for her father who died of cancer in 1989. Her parents helped her when she needed support and she is blessed that she can be there for them.
She has three grown children: Maeghan, who is the mother of Izabella and Kaleb; Mason, who is married to Emily; and Treabhar who is engaged to Abby, two stepsons; Chris, his wife Holly and their two children Bradyn and Jameson, and Kyle and his wife Kathleen.
Perian is an animal lover and has had many Fur Babies in her life, people used to drop off their unwanted pets in the neighborhood and her mother, neighbors and herself would take them in.
She now has adopted animals through the AWS Animal Shelter and given them loving homes. Currently she has two 7 lb. dogs, Gidgette and Bambi, that provide her with much therapeutic and unconditional love, a cat Dena, and her grand-cat Percy. There are always hugs and cuddles after a long day.
When she has free time she loves being able to breathe in the fresh air or just sit and listen to nature’s music. The best time of the year is when the peepers come alive, and some have seen her just sitting on the side of the road enjoying nature at its best.
Perian and her husband love to travel, when possible, exploring new places and seeing what America has to offer. Whether it’s close to home or miles away, it’s always a great adventure. They also enjoy making memories with family as life is precious and short, their motto is “take the time now as tomorrow is never promised.”
She is a loyal friend and enjoys connecting with them even if it’s through social media.
Most of all she is a strong, confident, loving, thoughtful and compassionate woman who appreciates everything and everyone in her life.
If she could leave one quote to her family and friends it would be:
“If there ever comes a day when we can’t be together, keep me in your heart, I will stay there forever.”
- Winnie the Pooh
