Today, for the the 8th day of the Women's History Month and the celebration of the International Woman's Day, we are celebrating this fantastic woman - Meet Rhonda Babine, 54, mother, grandmother, wife, daughter, friend, and nurse.
Rhonda Twombly Babine was born and raised in Scarborough, Maine the youngest of two children. This was back when Scarborough was a small town, and everyone knew each other. It was a special place to grow up, Rhonda made many lifelong friends that she remains close to today.
She learned early in life that with determination, hard work, and perseverance you could accomplish anything. From an early age Rhonda wanted to have a career in healthcare and follow in the footsteps of her grandmother and mother and work at Maine Medical Center, which back then was referred to as “the castle on the hill” by family members. As a teenager she volunteered at the hospital as a candy striper and remembers being inspired by the nurses and by the differences they were making in people’s lives. It was during this time that Rhonda first dreamt of becoming a nurse.
“When you have a dream, you’ve got to grab it and never let go.” - Carol Burnett
After graduating high school, she completed a diploma program and began her first nursing job as a Licensed Practical Nurse at Maine Medical Center. Soon after and over many years, Rhonda returned to school several times for undergraduate degrees and in 2009 completed a master’s in nursing program as an advanced practice nurse. Since this time, she has worked as a clinical nurse specialist with older adults and provides consultation, resources and support to patients and the healthcare team. Rhonda has published several peer reviewed articles that focus on delirium and falls in older adults and has co-authored one book chapter on guidance and coaching in advanced nursing practice. She has presented her work at many national conferences across the country. Rhonda has a passion for educating future and current nurses and being a role model and an inspirational leader. In fact, she will complete her doctorate in nursing practice with a focus on systems leadership in December 2022.
Even though they both attended Scarborough schools and knew of each other, it wasn’t until volunteering at the Scarborough fire department that Rhonda began dating her husband Matt. They both volunteered for Engine 7 at Oak Hill where Rhonda was one of the first female firefighters in town. Once they married, Rhonda began volunteering primarily on the Rescue and in addition to being a firefighter Matt would drive the rescue on nights when Rhonda was on call.
Rhonda is very proud of their 30-year-old son, Cameron who left Maine in 2012 to join the United States Marine Corps. Now a police officer, Cameron with his wife Ashley, daughter Juliette, and son Wells lives in Waxhaw, North Carolina. Every chance they get, Rhonda and Matt drive to NC from Maine for a visit.
She cherishes spending time with family and friends. She enjoys exercising, golf, and going for explorations on the back of her husband’s Harley Davidson. One of her favorite places to be is at the beach and spending time along the beautiful coast of Maine.
Another one of Rhonda's favorite quotes:
“My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to THRIVE”
– Maya Angelou
