Today, for the 10th day of the "Women's History Month" project, we are celebrating this amazing woman
Meet Sarah Petrin, 48, writer, change maker, and consultant working toward a better world.
Sarah was born in Kenya, East Africa, but she grew up in Old Orchard Beach and Saco. Her mother was a nurse and her father was a teacher. They went to Kenya as missionaries to help a village that was hit by a bad drought.
Sarah graduated from Thornton Academy in 1994, and Gordon College in Massachusetts in 1998. She studied International Relations and French, and created a major in African Studies. She did her Master's degree at Oxford University in Forced Migration at the Refugee Studies Center.
In her 20's and 30's, Sarah worked as a humanitarian relief worker, helping people and countries in crisis. She responded to emergencies with nonprofit organizations, the United Nations, and International Red Cross, managing cross-border operations and crises such as the Haiti earthquake, Ebola outbreak, tsunami in Thailand, and the war in Ukraine. She is the author of the book, Bring Rain: Helping Humanity in Crisis, which chronicles 20 years of working on the frontlines of global crises. In her 40s, she served as an advisor to NATO and taught courses on civil-military relations and the protection of civilians at the U.S. Army Peacekeeping and Stability Operations Institute. In these roles, she advocated for the importance of including women in peace building and conflict resolution. Sarah is a Senior Fellow at the Atlantic Council and Vice President of the Board of Directors for the World Affairs Council of Maine.
Life challenges:
"I'm still looking for a life partner who values my work and wants to create a family together. I am grateful for friends, family, and being part of kind and caring communities."
Sarah is passionate about helping people and organizations. She has worked in numerous crises. On an individual level, She has helped many refugee populations find a home. At the country level, She believes in working toward inclusive peace processes and bringing all parties to the table to resolve violent conflict.
