Today, for Women's History Month, I would like to introduce you to this amazing woman
Meet Libbey Moores Gallant - 46, Mother of 2, a fantastic 3rd Grade Teacher
Growing up in Winslow, Maine, I lived directly across the street from Halifax Street School. One of my favorite childhood memories was going into the school in August to help the teachers set up their classrooms. As they cleaned out their closets, they gave me extra math workbooks, old reading textbooks, and mimeograph worksheets. I went home and played school for hours on end with these treasures. I had a whole class of pretend students and even made my own gradebook so I could record their grades.
I started college at UMF majoring in Elementary Education but did not feel it was the right fit for me. After a year there, I transferred to UMaine so I could return to my passion of Track and Field. One day at Track practice, I hurt my back and ended up in the training room to receive treatment. Lucky for me that I hurt myself that day because it was there that I met an injured football player named Jon, my future husband.
After graduating from UMaine with degrees in Public Administration and Human Development, I realized that being a town manager or working in state government was not going to make me happy. All of those years playing school helped me to see that teaching children was what I was meant to do. I loved school and everything about it. So, I came back to my original major, elementary education, and completed my teaching classes at UNE. Wanting to become a better teacher, I returned to college and earned my master’s degree in Literacy Education from USM. I began my career at C.K. Burns School in Saco in 1999 and have been teaching third grade since 2003
Jon and I live in Old Orchard Beach with our two sons, Wesley and Cooper. We have recently added Sammy, a golden retriever, to our family.
Here is another one Libbey's favorite quotes:
"Reading is important, because if you can read, you can learn anything about everything and everything about anything." - Tomie DePaola
